Part of being a digital nomad is the freedom it affords you to work and live anywhere you want. But once you arrive, settle in and start working online creating content, you still need to be able to get around your destination cheaply and efficiently. Many digital nomads ride scooters around, especially in Asia.
Everyone rides scooters in Asia, and scooters offer an affordable way to move around and go out for meals, groceries, and sightseeing. They’re much better than taking a taxi, Uber, or Grab all the time, which can drain your budget if you need to use them daily.
Getting the best out of the Digital Nomad experience
Part of my vision of being a digital nomad is exploring and immersing ourselves in the destination we choose to spend time in. People on holiday stay in the main areas and see the well-known attractions when on vacation. We want to be able to go and find the places that are not as well known and not populated by people on holiday.
But the scooter also allows us to head to the market and pick up food or go to a nearby coffee shop and grab a skinny latte or iced coffee. Having the freedom to head out anytime after finishing working online to explore is the dream.
Did you know you can hire a scooter for around $200 monthly in Bali, Thailand, or Vietnam? It is great value, and scooters don’t use much petrol as you zip around places. I think Bec and I need scooters to get the most out of any digital nomad experience in the future.
One of the most important things about hiring a scooter as a digital nomad is ensuring you have insurance to cover any accidents while riding the bike. We must be responsible for our actions and decisions, get licensed, know how to ride, wear helmets and be covered by insurance.
The last thing we want when travelling overseas is to end up in an accident while riding scooters and have some enormous medical costs to cover. This could quickly end our nomad experience and send us home and back to our old lives.
If you don’t have a licence, your travel insurance will most probably not cover you for any costs associated with crashing your scooter. I am sure we have all seen those people with GoFundMe pages looking to cover medical costs from an accident on holiday. We don’t want to be talked about like that!

That certainly will not be us, and we will get the proper licence and insurance before we travel and hire scooters in Asia. To be transparent, you don’t need a license in many Asian countries to hire a scooter.
So, in saying all this, no, you don’t need to ride scooters to be a digital nomad, but having the option to ride a scooter safely will undoubtedly enhance the experience of living and working online in any destination you choose in the future.
